Small groups work because they are rooted in relationships, not in organizational structures or edifices. Within the relationships people want and need, they find what they didn’t know they lacked: Jesus and the Church.

So, I’m going to reflect on just that: my own poverty. And what a perfect time Lent is to experience and reflect on our own spiritual poverty.

Mark Rose wrote in our last EC blog entry about how we hunger for connection to people and to God. I know that I hunger for a lot of things, especially affirmation and security. We experience a constant state of need until we see God face to face.

What definitely scared me the most was the uncarpeted stairs- the bogeyman was going to grab my legs from between the steps and pull me into an abyss.

Don’t get me wrong: small groups have their place. I personally know many students who have experienced radical conversion of heart, mind and soul through attending small groups. Their faith stories/testimonies of Jesus’s love “becoming real” in their lives are powerful, a witness to trust more in our Lord and Savior.

So your parish wants more unity – a vision to run with. 

Excluding maybe a couple of extraordinary instances, I think it is fair to say that a broken world begets broken people.
